There are three main types of smoke alarm; the Ionisation alarm, the Optical alarm and the combined version.

The Ionisation alarm is the cheapest and most commonly found. It is most susceptible to the smaller smoke particles emitted from flaming fires such as a chip pan fire. The Optical alarm is more sensitive to larger smoke particles such as the slow burning fires like burning upholstery and plastic wires. The combined version is good at detecting both types of fire.

Smoke alarms can be powered by battery or by mains supply. Some batteries have a 10 year lifespan, which can be an advantage as it means your battery is less likely to have run out if a situation occurs where it is needed.

Smoke alarms are quick and easy to install. Just follow the manufacturer’s instructions for screwing it into the ceiling. The location of the alarm is important. Ideally it should be 1ft away from a wall or a light. It should be positioned as central as possible and in a place where it can be heard easily, especially when you are asleep.

Maintenance is incredibly simple and consumes only a couple of minutes each year.

• You should press the test button once per week to check that the alarm is in good working order and that the battery or any other component hasn’t failed.
• Change the battery of the alarm annually unless you are using a ten year smoke alarm.
• Twice a year open the case and carefully vacuum the inside to clear the sensors. If the case isn’t removable, then vacuum through the holes.
• After 10 years it is recommended that a new smoke alarm is purchased.
